In Upper Swabia-Allgäu, life is not fast-paced but more about savouring each moment. Stroll through Württemberg Allgäu, where apple trees line the path, and on a clear day, the Alps greet you in the distance. Rolling hills, serene ponds, and baroque monasteries set the stage for journeys where each step feels like a fresh start.Christiane Würtenberger traded the bustle of everyday life for a weekend in the countryside: from the charming Zum Schloss Hotel in Amtzell, and the cosy Rösslerhof Farm in Schlier, to the Bauhofer Cheese Dairy, where guided tours reveal the art of local cheesemaking. Here, a countryside escape is more than just slowing down - it’s an invitation to make genuine connections: with the region’s locals, living in harmony with nature, but also with the landscape that can both inspire and ground you.

Arrive and Feel at HomeWelcome to Hotel Zum Schloss in Amtzell

We enter the historic Hotel Zum Schloss where the uniquely furnished rooms offer fantastic views of the Old Castle opposite. Our host, Stephanie Fischer, happily shares tips for exploring the area. Ralph, her husband, smiles and quips, “Hosting is easy when the region has so much to offer.” And he's right: the Singenberg Pond is just around the corner, Lake Constance is not far away, and the feeling…? Like a home away from home.A tip from our host, Stephanie Fischer:
A short walk to the Holy Cross Chapel offers views across the rolling hills into the distance and towards the Alps. Linger outside on the bench beneath the old lime tree or sit quietly in the cool interior of the small church.
Cozy café terrace with tables, flowers, and a board displaying aperitif recommendations in front of bright windows.
This isn't just a place to eat, it's a place to chat!

Experience Peace and TranquillityEn Route to Rösslerhof Farm

Onwards to the Rösslerhof Farm, and the landscape between Amtzell, Bodnegg, and Schlier unfolds in all its glory - rolling hills, orchards, small forests, and wide-open fields that stretch as far as the eye can see. Every turn reveals a new panorama, inviting spontaneous photo stops and moments spent awe. Nature unfolds cinematically in real time - and just around the corner, the Rösslerhof Farm awaits as the next stop of our journey.

Top Tip: A Stunning View

The Baroque parish church of Ulrich and Magnus is a true gem and the landmark of Bodnegg - from its viewing platform, clear days can reveal breathtaking panoramas from the majestic Alps stretching right down to Lake Constance.
En route the orchards steal the show - spring brings a sea of blossoms, autumn a colourful fruit buffet. Hop on a bike or hit the hiking trails, and be sure to make a stop at the glistening lakes (swim gear at the ready)! And the Rösslerweiher Pond near Schlier is a quiet hidden treasure - secluded, serene, and perfect for a picnic. Finally, we arrive at the Rösslerhof Farm, where we’ve booked our second night – and it is a stay we won’t forget!

Coffee with the CowsRösslerhof Farm: A Family Business with Heart

We sit on the terrace of the Rösslerhof café in Schlier, my fork sinking into a slice of homemade apple cake topped with cream and the cappuccino is exactly to my taste – crowned with a generous dollop of frothy milk. A moment of pure bliss. I squint contentedly into the sun and simply listen: bees humming, cows lowing. Four generations of the Güldenberg family have been welcoming guests with homemade delights straight from their organic farm - available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. There are also five lovingly furnished holiday apartments available to stay in, so as night falls, the gentle chirping of crickets can lull you to sleep. Sound like a true German countryside holiday? That’s exactly what it is.

Raw Milk Cheese, Made by HandCheese Specialities from Käserei Bauhofer

We are now right in the heart of Upper Swabia-Allgäu - and what would a countryside holiday be without real indulgence? At the Käserei Bauhofer in Bodnegg, we take a look inside the maturing cellars and see how cheese is made from the finest raw hay milk, and you can truly taste the care and patience that goes into maturing each wheel. A must-visit for anyone wanting to experience how good regional produce can taste.

A Tip from Belinda Locherer:

If you crave nature, local flavours, and a dash of adventure, then the Waldburg Adventure Trail will deliver all three! Start at Waldburg Castle and explore 12 km of Upper Swabia - passing an ostrich farm, an apple juice factory, and our very own cheese dairy. Authentic experiences at every turn!
Later, we find myself in the small shop, torn between choices. Should I take home some Allgäu Emmental, the Bergkäse (mountain cheese), or perhaps some of the fiery chilli cheese? The shop assistant offers samples and says with a smile, “Take a little of each – then you don’t have to choose.” I grin. We understand each other perfectly.
