BW Story - trickytine

Domestic Riesling combined with cardamom...

Hot mulled wine goes back to the time of the Romans, who brought the first wine to Germany and to Baden-Württemberg. It is said that they warmed and spiced the wine during the winter to keep them warm….and happy. Glühwein is generally the seasonal favourite!

Everything is different this winter, but we still don't have to do without delicious mulled wine. This tasty recipe, courtesy of Stuttgart food blogger trickytine, proves that it can also taste great at home.
The most important basic ingredient: delicious, local wine from the region. Did you know that there is hardly any other big city where wine is as present as in Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg? At the end of the article you will find a selection of the five best wine hotspots in the city.
In the recipe, we use the Kesselliebe Riesling Cannstatter Zuckerle from the Kern winery. The Cannstatter Zuckerle is a steep slope just outside Stuttgart, which owes its name to the Zuckerberg hill located there. As the name suggests, the “Kesselliebe” winegrowers specialize in the vineyards in the Stuttgart city area - perfect for a local mulled wine.
In addition to Riesling, Trollinger also thrives in Stuttgart. This grape variety is now experiencing a renaissance and has increasingly shaken off its dusty and old-fashioned image. You can try Trollinger with a classic snack or slightly chilled with an aperitif.
Try our recipe and enjoy it yourself or with friends and family, because it is a delicious festive treat! There are many different versions, so you can perhaps add a few of your own ingredients and call it your own brew.

Mulled wine with gin, cardamom and rosemary

Recipe for local Riesling mulled wine

Ingredients:
  • 500ml wine
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange sliced
  • ½ lemon sliced
  • 5 juniper berries
  • 2 star of anise
  • 10 cloves
  • 1 cup/200g sugar

  • Preparations:
  • Combine all ingredients in a pot and give them a quick stir.
  • Heat until the wine just barely reaches a simmer over medium-high heat. (Don’t cook too hot — you don’t want to boil off the alcohol.)
  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes.
  • Use a fine mesh strainer, remove and discard the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise and ginger.
  • Serve warm in heatproof mugs, topped with your favourite garnishes. Enjoy!

Top 5 wine hotspots in Stuttgart

As inspiration for future trips to Stuttgart, Trickytine introduces you to her favorite places around the topic of wine in Stuttgart. Unfortunately, some places can only be visited to a limited extent or not at all at the moment, but just see it as inspiration for future trips to Baden-Württemberg. It's worth asking the wineries in the region whether their sales stands are open.

    1. Weinhaus Stetter

    Address: Rosenstraße 32, 70182 Stuttgart
The Weinstube Stetter is in a very cozy location in Stuttgart's Bohnenviertel. In my opinion, it is one of the prettiest corners of the city and definitely worth a visit! Stuttgart's oldest wine bar offers over 500 bottled wines to choose from. I like to sit in the small and cozy wine bar with a glass of Riesling and enjoy the traditional, hearty Swabian cuisine.

    2. Stuttgart Wine Village

The Stuttgarter Weindorf takes place every year in late summer and is a fixed date in my calendar. For around two weeks, the stalls and arbors of the region's various winegrowers stretch from Schillerplatz to Marktplatz. It's the perfect opportunity to sample Stuttgart's diverse range of wines or, of course, to pay a visit to your favorite winemakers. My personal highlight is the stand of the young winegrowers, who offer their best products there every year.

    3. Wine walks around Stuttgart

Even better than sitting down to sip a Viertele (as we Swabians call it) is to head out into the vineyards and earn your Viertele with a walk on one of the numerous wine trails around the Kessel. The choice of routes is huge and they all offer fantastic views over the vineyards, the town and the surrounding countryside. One of the most popular hiking routes is rightly the path from Untertürkheim up to the Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg.
On one side, you have a view of the boiler and urban industry, while on the other you can look down into the valley to the picturesque villages of Uhlbach and Rotenberg. My tip: walk on from the burial chapel into picturesque Uhlbach and discover the pretty half-timbered houses and stop off at one of the pubs. Or make a detour to the Weinbaumuseum for an extra dose of wine knowledge!

    Address: Dorotheenstraße 2, 70173 Stuttgart
I love the Weinhandlung Kreis for a relaxed glass of wine or sparkling wine after my weekly shopping. It's practically right on the way when I leave my beloved market hall with full baskets. So I can't help but stop there. The atmosphere there is wonderfully laid-back and perfect for a relaxed Saturday afternoon. The bar is currently closed, but it is still possible to buy wines.

    5. Gallery of core wines

    Address: Cottastrasse 4, 70178 Stuttgart
Galerie Kernweine has a history steeped in tradition. The building was originally the home of the Kern family of winegrowers, who pressed their wines in the cellar of the building. Today, the „Galerie Kernweine“ is a trendy meeting place with changing art exhibitions and a bar. Although the focus here is more on art than wine, a drink in this cool, urban ambience is definitely worth a visit, whether it's a coffee, long drink or Viertele.
