Originally built as a Renaissance pleasure palace, the historic building is now home to the University of Music Karlsruhe. The Karlsruhe Open-Air Cinema Nights are organised by the local Schauburg Cinema, whose team is known for its cinema expertise and ambitious programme. Screenings take place daily from July to September. For selected films, directors and lead actors are invited to join the audience after the credits for a Q&A session. To make sure you don’t head into your movie adventure hungry or thirsty, the beer garden opens as early as 7 pm. Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with tasty food and drinks before the film begins. No need to bring your own seating, chairs are provided on site. The screenings start after dark, a little later in July and a little earlier in September.

The sky glows in every colour imaginable, reflected in the waters of Untersee, the western part of the lake. As darkness gently settles over the lakeside promenade, the film begins, usually around 9:30 pm. The screen is set up just a stone’s throw from the water on the peninsula at Mettnau Lido. Summer nights are peaceful, the sound crystal clear. The Radolfzell Movie Nights provide the perfect finale to a day on Lake Constance. Held exclusively in midsummer, the event offers a truly special atmosphere. Seating is provided on the lawn at Mettnau Lido, ensuring a comfortable cinema experience by the water.

With two screens to choose from, there is plenty of variety. Screen 1 features a spectacular 4K laser projection system, bringing the latest must-see blockbusters to life, from action and fantasy to thrillers, family films and everything in between.Anyone who has been here knows that drive-in cinemas are simply iconic. The picture quality easily rivals that of conventional cinemas, and there is no noise from neighbouring cars. The snacks and meal options are excellent, too.And yes, drive-in cinema works in winter as well. Screen 1 even offers connections for fan heaters, which can be rented on site. The only things likely to stop a screening are dense fog or heavy snowfall, both of which are extremely rare in the south of Kornwestheim.

For more than 20 evenings, the big screen lights up the courtyard in front of the historic Karlskaserne Arts Centre in Ludwigsburg, just a short walk from Ludwigsburg Residential Palace and the Blühendes Barock Gardens. The open-air cinema is a classic in its own right. Founded in the mid-1990s, it has grown into one of the largest open-air cinemas around. More than 2,200 visitors can gather in the picturesque courtyard, yet many screenings still sell out. For three weeks in August, the programme features current blockbusters alongside cinematic gems and beloved classics, all presented with great attention to detail. Those who arrive early can watch the sun disappear behind the red-tiled roofs of the former barracks before the film begins.

A Different Kind of Open-Der Air Cinema

Mannheim’s open-air cinema season begins as early as June. Every Saturday, Cinema Quadrat e.V. presents a special film on the rooftop terrace of the K1 building. As a non-profit organiser, the association is committed to showcasing films beyond the mainstream, without shying away from popular blockbusters such as Barbie. Filmmakers are always welcome guests, and there is another advantage to this unique venue in the heart of Mannheim: screenings never have to be cancelled. If it rains, the audience simply moves indoors to the cinema auditorium. 'Cinema Quadrat' offers far more than summer screenings. Throughout the year, the K1 venue hosts film series, symposia, director visits and film discussions.

Like a small amphitheatre blanketed in perfectly manicured grass, the elegant terraces of the Rosenneuheitengarten, a rose garden in Baden-Baden, provide the setting for this charming open-air cinema. The intimate Moonlight Cinema is close to the town centre, yet far enough away to ensure complete tranquillity once the screening begins. Visitors settling on the grassy terraces may want to bring a blanket or seat cushion. Those looking for extra comfort can reserve one of the 48 seats on the terrace. Despite its modest size, the cinema offers a selection of snacks and drinks, including excellent wines from Nägelsförst Winery in Baden-Baden and Börsig Winery in Niederlehn in the Ortenau region. To guarantee crystal-clear sound, headphones are provided at the entrance.

The food also deserves top marks, with steaks, burgers, pizza and fresh salads served in a relaxed wine-festival atmosphere. The only difference from a traditional wine festival: everyone is eagerly awaiting the blockbuster. As you might expect, the selection of Heilbronn wines is just as impressive. You could almost market Heilbronn’s open-air cinema as a wine tasting with a film attached. On some evenings, local live bands provide entertainment before the screening. Is this still an open-air cinema, or the ultimate all-in-one summer experience? Either way, it’s no surprise that the courtyard of the Heilbronn Wine Cooperative is always buzzing with visitors.
